Arbroath Football Club, Board members and staff, were saddened to hear the news of the death of Geordie Baird.
Geordie was 83, and died suddenly, but peacefully, at home last week.
He was a life- long supporter of the Lichties and was to be found on the terracing at every home game, and some of the local away games as well.
He was one of that band of supporters, who always changed ends at half time to be behind the opposition goal, to catch all the action.
For his 80th birthday, he received a letter of acknowledgement of his life-long loyalty to the Club from the previous Chairman, John Christison, and that letter become one of Geordie’s prized and proud possessions.
He was also proud to be one of the first to actually see the Ladbrokes League Two Championship Trophy come back to Gayfield, as he was part of the group in the Hospitality Suite that Saturday evening, when the Cup was paraded into the event.
Geordie had many Saturday football friends, and he loved the camaraderie and banter of the terracing, and he will be sorely missed by those he met at Gayfield.
Another interesting and little known connection, was that the present Arbroath FC Chairman, Mike Caird, played for the Lad’s Club with George, Geordie’s son, and Mike’s Dad and Geordie helped in running the team for a spell.
The Club would like to extend their condolences to George his son, wife Linda, and grandson Reece.
A a mark of respect, to Geordie, and his family and friends, the Club the will fly the flag at half mast on Saturday for the Forfar game, and again on Tuesday 13th March, when his cortege will take him past his beloved Gayfield, on his journey to his final resting place in Arbirlot kirkyard.
Geordie Baird, a life-long Lichtie, who will be sorely missed by all.
