Tom Cargill

On Saturday Arbroath FC held a minute’s applause for Arbroath Legend and Hall of Fame inductee, Tom Cargill who sadly passed away over the summer.

“Tam” Cargill was one of our very first Hall of Fame inductees holding the club record for league appearances with an incredible 445 appearances for the Red Lichties between his debut in 1966 and 1981.

Tom played the vast majority of his Arbroath career under legendary Manager and fellow Hall of Fame inductee, Albert Henderson.

A classy player, Tom played in a golden period for Arbroath Football Club and the Lichties celebrated some wonderful achievements and recorded some historical results during this time.

Tom continued to have strong links to Gayfield and as well as watching the team from the stand Tom was a wonderful ambassador for the club.

Tom helped the club with its work in the community and was an active volunteer with the Arbroath FC Football Memories Group which helped those in the local community with dementia.

Arbroath Chairman Mike Caird said “Tom will not only be remembered as a talented devoted footballer but an absolute gentleman. I remember chatting to Tom after a match in the boardroom on a number of occasions where his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game shone through.”

The word Legend is meant for those who are extra special and on Saturday we honoured an Arbroath Legend.
