HOW ARBROATH SHOOK THE FOOTBALL UNIVERSE!
The intrigue and drama behind the most sensational result in the history of football will be the subject of a talk to be held at Auchmithie Village Hall next month.
Journalist and historian Fraser Clyne aims to “separate the myth from the reality” of Arbroath’s record-breaking 36-0 win against Aberdeen’s Bon Accord in 1885.
The result, which stills ranks as the biggest victory in a first class competitive football match anywhere in the world, came in a first round Scottish Cup tie at Gayfield.
“There have been lots of false stories going around for years which is frustrating as they keep getting repeated, such as the one about Bon Accord actually being a cricket club, and I hope to demonstrate that some of them have no foundation,” said Fraser.
His talk, “How Arbroath Shook The Football Universe”, is based on months of research which led to his book, “The Aberdeen Men Can’t Play Football”, a title inspired by a quote about the 36-0 victory.
A signed Arbroath shirt kindly donated by the club will be the main prize in a raffle on the night. Other prizes include a bottle of Red Lichtie gin, generously donated by Redcastle Gin, one of the club’s sponsors.
The talk takes place at Auchmithie Village Hall, near Arbroath, on Monday 8 May at 7 pm, with all proceeds going to the hall’s upkeep fund.
Tickets cost £5 and include a copy of Fraser’s book, plus a reprinted 1948 “History of Arbroath FC”.
