Greenock Morton 1 – 2 Arbroath

Thanks to Ton TV and Greenock Morton for these highlights.

Arbroath made a stunning come back to secure a vital victory over Greenock Morton on Saturday at Cappielow.

Derek Gaston came back into the team whilst Toyosi Olusanya was given his debut, with Steven Hetherington and Dylan Tait both back in the squad.

However it was Greenock Morton who were celebrating as new signing George Oakley gave them the dream start in the 4th minute when he headed in.

With Adarkwa again impressing up front, it was Olusanya who was providing support with Michael McKenna playing out on the right wing.

McKenna had a free kick well saved, but at the other end Scott Stewart headed off the line, before Bitsindou and Little headed clear on the follow up.

Adarkwa came close with a lovely curling strike after coming in from the wing but Schwake was equal to it. McKenna had a low shot saved by Schwake just before the break.

It wasn’t until the second half though until Arbroath start to really play with McKenna switching back to his normal role behind the striker with Olusanya moving wide.

It was Colin Hamilton who pulled Arbroath level in the 63rd minute with Arbroath winning the ball in midfield after a run by Olusanya was blocked before Hamilton picked up. Adarkwa found space to shoot, and it was Hamilton who was at the back post to prod the ball into the empty net to equalise.

It was the Arbroath of old with the shirts of maroon first to every ball and applying pressure all over the pitch, and every time they roamed forward there seemed to be a threat.

The winning goal was a thing of beauty, and a real team goal. A Hamilton clearance found McKenna who flicked the ball onto substitute Hilson who then in turn found McKenna. McKenna laid the ball off to Adarkwa who found Dow on the overlap, and his ball back inside was met by McKenna on the half volley which he hit first time into the top corner. It truly was an outstanding goal.

Pressure on the defence by Dale Hilson met Arbroath won possession back on the half way line and as Adarkwa surged forward, he unselfishly laid the ball into the path of McKenna but his low drive was blocked by Schwake.

The final whistle blew soon afterwards and it was a fantastic win for Arbroath who are now undefeated in 11 games against Greenock Morton.
