Nearly 28 years ago Arbroath welcomed our near neighbours Montrose to Gayfield in a Scottish League First Division match. Coincidentaly Arbroath also had a midweek league cup match against East Fife to look forward to the following week. Team news had centre half Joe Carson nursing an ankle injury but hopefully he would be fit for selection come kick off time. Joe had recently submitted a transfer request as he could not get his place back due to the good form of Billy Wells.

Arbroath’s pool that day had Derek Rylance, Tom Cargill, John Fletcher, Tommy Yule, Albert Kidd as well as local boy Steve Mylles in the squad. Montrose could call on the services of Dave Gorman, Dennis D’Arcy, Bobby Ford, Bobby Livingstone and Garry the father of Arbroath’s hero Simon Murray.

Referee that day was JRP Gordon who had been chosen to officiate at the 1978 World Cup finals before being suspended by the SFA for receiving gifts from AC Milan prior to a UEFA Cup match versus Levski Sofia.

If you were hungry at the match then with “Full Time in Sight” you’ll get “A Good Bite” at the Wimpy or if you fancied Selkirk Bannocks with your Stovies for your tea then Mitchell’s the Baker in Millgate and High Street was where you needed to go to. 2 Star petrol (75p), 3 Star (76p) or 4 Star would set you back 77p per gallon from Walkers Service Station in Hume Street. If you threw the boat out and went with the 4 Star but felt that the petrol had cost you more than you thought then you could relax with an “Inexpensive Snack” at the Cafe Kit Kat.
