Premier Sports Cup – 2nd Round – Season 2021/22

Sunday 15th August 2021, Gayfield Park, Arbroath, 14:00pm kick off

Arbroath lost out in the lottery of penalties this afternoon after twice taking the lead against Premiership and League Cup Holders St Johnstone.

Joel Nouble fired in from a Nicky Low corner kick in the 31st minute. Arbroath defended well and started to really press the visitors in the second half but St Johnstone were given a life line when Derek Gaston was adjudged to have fouled Reece Devine in the 58th minute.

However Derek Gaston brilliantly saved Jason Kerr’s shot but Glenn Middleton just snuck in the rebound inside the post.

The match then went to Extra Time and Thomas O’Brien smashed home a stunning volley just 3 minutes into the first period of extra time.

Arbroath were furious when referee Colin Steven awarded a corner kick after it looked like Chris Hamilton took an elbow to his throat.

As fate would have it Jamie McCart nodded in as he rose unchallenged at the back post from the resulting disputed corner kick.

With no other goals it was down to penalties.

Ricky Little hit the crossbar 0 – 0
Liam Craig hit the bottom left corner 0 – 1
Liam Henderson curled in a beauty to the top left corner 1 – 1
Callum Hendry made it 1-2 into the bottom right
Dale Hilson hit his shot over 1-2
Derek Gaston saved from Callum Booth 1 – 2
Nicky Low equalised 2 – 2
Bobby Linn hit the post 2 – 2
Ali McCann netted to make it 3-2

A tough way to bow out, but another terrific team performance which the lads can be proud of.
