Arbroath moved up to 3rd place in the Ladbrokes League One Table after a hard fought win over Queen’s Park.
With Thomas O’Brien suspended, Dick Campbell moved Blair Yule back into the heart of defence and with Bobby Linn and Danny Denholm struggling with illness this week it was a chance for Omar Kader and Gavin Swankie to come into the starting line up.
Gayfield and Wind go hand and hand, but today the wind was blowing in the opposite direction and towards Pleasureland.
Queen’s Park who have been on a very good run of results lately took the lead only after 12 minutes when Lewis McGhee thumped the ball into the back of the net from close range.
Arbroath rallied and within a minute could have scored two goals, with Queen’s Park keeper Michael White producing some outstanding saves.
Queen’s Park continued to make chances and Robbie Leitch should have scored when the ball was laid off to him by William Mortimer.
Leighton McIntosh who continued to impress up front with Ryan Wallace was booked by referee Colin Steven in the 34th minute for simulation, but from my angle it looked like there was contact.
As the Lichties pushed they finally got the equaliser when Gavin Swankie netted in the 43rd minute. Gavin had been unlucky a few minutes earlier but finally got his goal to pull the Lichties level.
The extent of the wind was evident as the supporters changed ends with Arbroath to utilise the power of the wind for the final 45 minutes.
The pressure was soon starting to build on the Queen’s Park goal and Ryan Wallace almost netted after being played through by a beautiful pass.
Leighton McIntosh then almost directed a header into the net as keeper White came rushing out to challenge but again the ball was just on the wrong side of the post.
However the goal did come and it was David Gold who rifled the ball into the back of the net after it fell in the box following a corner kick.
It soon became the David Gold show as he pulled out all the tricks as the Lichties continued to dominate.
Wallace, Swankie, McIntosh all came close but every time White was keeping his side in it.
In the final 2 minutes the Arbroath supporters were treated to some real silky soccer by Gold who seemed to have the ball glued to his feet as he danced around the Queen’s defenders trying to get room to shoot. Then with almost the last kick of the ball Gold hit a well executed overhead kick, but his shot was just over.
Another great second half performance and another valuable 3 points.
More to come…..
C’mon the Lichties!
