Arbroath 2 – 0 Airdrieonians

Arbroath confirmed their play-off spot for the Ladbrokes Championship on Saturday with a dominant display over Airdrieonians.

Danny Denholm and Bobby Linn returned to the starting line up with Thomas O’Brien missing from the squad and Leighton McIntosh dropping to the bench.

On a glorious sunny afternoon at Gayfield (Yes you read that correctly) the Lichties attacked the Harbour end in the first half and didn’t take long to find their range with Danny Denholm, Ryan Wallace and Michael McKenna all getting shots in at goal in the first 15 minutes.

It was Ryan’s tenacity that allowed the Lichties to take the lead as he chased the ball from an Airdrieonians defender getting a fortunate bounce before closing in on goal. As Wallace dribbled past the defence it looked like the chance had gone but a pass to Denholm who himself drifted passed a defender before firing past Rohan Ferguson in the 28th minute.

Arbroath continued to attack in the second half with Denholm looking dangerous but it was Colin Hamilton who netted directly from a Ryan Wallace corner as he met the ball volleying it high into the net to double Arbroath’s lead in the 58th minute.

Michael McKenna almost added a 3rd goal only 60 seconds later as he raced in but his strike bounced off the post.

Omar Kader, Leighton McIntosh and Ryan McCord were all introduced for Denholm, McKenna and Gavin Swankie but the Lichties couldn’t find the 3rd goal despite some lovely passes from McCord including one which almost let Bobby Linn score, but Ferguson was quick off his line.

Airdrieonians battled all day but the Arbroath defence and David Hutton kept another clean sheet.

The afternoon feel good factor continued as the annual player of the year awards were handed out after the match.
