Arbroath 1 – 2 Heart of Midlothian

Arbroath were defeated 2-1 tonight at Gayfield by Heart of Midlothian on a scorching hot summer’s evening.

The Lichties handed debuts to Darren Jamieson and Jason Thomson with only Ricky Little absent and Steven Doris still working on his rehabilitation.

The Lichties started with Jamieson, Thomson, Hamilton, O’Brien, Whatley (c), Denholm, Linn, McCord, Wallace, Swankie, McKenna.

Substitutes – David Gold, Omar Kader, Kane Hester, Gary Fraser (T), Shaun Leishman (T), Lewis Elder (T) and Darren Hill (GK)

Hearts brought a large squad of players and almost made a dream start when striker Ollie Bozanic smashed a shot off the bar. The ball bounced down towards the line before being cleared.

Arbroath benefited from having a team full of players who have played together for a few seasons and Bobby Linn who was looking sharp was denied by Hearts keeper Kevin Silva in the 8th minute when he saved Linn’s rasping shot.

Darren Jamieson impressed in the Arbroath goal denying Steven MacLean.

Danny Denholm fired a well struck volley at Silva but the trialist keeper did well.

Ryan McCord was finding his Arbroath team mates with some well timed passes and he did have the ball in the net but it was ruled offside.

Heart’s took the lead in the 43rd minute when Ali Crawford found Aidan Keena and his low shot beat Jamieson.

The game became more open as the heavily changed line ups got to grips with the game.

Darren Jamieson produced another fine save when he tipped a shot over the bar from close range but was helpless a few minutes later when Christophe Berra smashed a shot down and off the bar in near identical fashion to Bozanic’s first half shot.

Arbroath brought on Lewis Elder for Gavin Swankie late in the second half with Dario Zanatta also come on for Hearts for Rory Currie.

A slick move in the 85th minute allowed Hearts to double their lead when a cross from the wing was fired into the goal by Ross Callachan.

Although in the final minute Kane Hester picked up the ball deep in his own half and ran towards the Hearts goal. He evaded challenges from 3 defenders before firing the ball past Kelby Mason for the goal of the game.
