Arbroath recorded another strong performance against English Championship side Bolton Wanderers for their 3rd pre-season friendly in 6 days. The Lichties made a strong start and a bursting run by Steven Doris was followed by a shot which was just dragged wide of the far post. Thomas O’Brien connected with a volley at the back post from a corner but his shot was high.
Bolton came back into with shots from Adam Le Fondre and Jeff King. The deadlock was broken in the 31st minute when Colin Hamilton was adjudged to have brought down Le Fondre. It seemed like play was waved on after Hamilton’s tackle but after a few seconds referee John McKendrick pointed to the spot. Adam Le Fondre blasted his penalty right down the middle giving Rick Gomes no chance.
However a minute later and the Lichties were given a chance to get right back into it as Omar Kader was taken out by Bolton Keeper Mark Howard. Steven Doris stepped up and scored his second penalty in 2 games.
The Lichties made a really positive start to the second half but were undone in the cruelest way when Danny Denholm got a touch onto Connor Hall’s cut back with the ball trickling past the stranded Ricky Gomes into the back of the net.
The game went on with both sides making several substitutions but neither side could find another goal.
