Arbroath 1 – 1 Greenock Morton
Arbroath came back to secure a point against Greenock Morton today at Gayfield. The visitors have been on an incredible run of form of late and with the best defence in the Championship it was always going to be a tight game.
With just one change from last weekend’s line up with Hoti being replaced by Tait, the Lichties started brightly attacking the Harbour end with Schwake palming away a Scott Allan shot after just 3 minutes.
Thomas O’Brien met a Scott Allan corner and his header looked goal bound but Efe Ambrose blocked the goal bound effort for another corner.
Lewis Strapp and Robbie Muirhead had a shot wide then a shot saved in the 28th and 30th minute respectively before the Lichties were dealt a blow when Scott Bitsindou shad to leave the field due to injury in the 32nd minute. Florent Hoti came on for Bitsindou with Strapp having a wild shot just a minute later.
Robbie Crawford was booked in the 35th minute for a high challenge on Thomas O’Brien which earned him a yellow card. After both players received treatment play resumed.
As it looked like it was going to end goalless Lewis McGrattan raced onto a ball and ran at goal with his shot from the left finding the far corner of the net to give the visitors the lead at half time.
Daniel Fosu and Keaghan Jacobs replaced Scott Allan and Dylan Tait at the break as Arbroath looked at a different approach to breaking through the stubborn Morton backline.
Fosu went up front with Linn slotting back to the left wing.
The change worked as within 2 minutes of the interval Fosu showed great determination and won the ball and then held it up in the Morton box before crossing. The ball was just out of reach of Michael McKenna but David Gold followed up and netted to draw the sides level!
Morton then rallied as Grimshaw hit a shot over the bar, with Baird also having a header cleared off the Arbroath line on the hour mark.
Robbie Crawford was just wide of the post with a free kick but Arbroath started to really press.
Daniel Fosu had a header just with in the 71st minute before Deri Corfe replaced Bobby Linn.
Corfe had a header which was just wide of the post in the 81st before Fosu had two changes. HIs first was an angled shot in the 83rd minute before a shot just seconds later from inside the D which was just over the bar.
As Arbroath pressed Marcel Oakley again was having a great game down the right with Michael McKenna showing his quality all over the park.
Colin Hamilton came racing in at the back post for a cross in the 87th minute but was just wide.
In the end both sides had to settle for a point. The draw sees Morton drop from 2nd to 4th with Arbroath still 5 points behind Cove Rangers.
The fight shown by the Lichties in the second half will be vital for the second half of the season.
C’mon the Lichties
