Arbroath 0 – 2 Clyde
Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup – Round 4 – Season 2019 / 2020
Saturday 12th October 2019, Gayfield Park, Arbroath, 3.00pm kick off
Arbroath crashed out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup after a poor performance which a David Goodwillie inspired Clyde took full advantage.
Arbroath made with 4 changes from the team that faced Dundee with Jason Thomson, David Gold, Bobby Linn dropping to the bench and with Miko Virtanen cup tied.
In came Mark Whatley, Greig Spence, Omar Kader and James Murphy.
Clyde attacked the Harbour end with a strong Gayfield wind at their back and took the lead after only 9 minutes. A sublime pass from David Goodwillie who returned from serving a two match suspension played in Chris Johnston who rounded Derek Gaston to make it 1-0.
Johnston, who was nominated for the PFA Scotland’s League 2 Player of the Year last season showing a cool head and great composure.
Arbroath tried to respond and Mark Whatley came close with a shot from the 18 yard line in the 25th minute whilst Steven Doris forced David Mitchell into a good save just 2 minutes later from a tight angle.
David Goodwillie again showed his class when he executed an overhead kick but his shot was over the Arbroath bar.
Clyde striker Darren Smith should have made it 2-0 after just 34 minus after being played in by Goodwillie but despite being through on goal Derek Gaston made a brilliant save with his leg to keep it at 1-0.
Colin Hamilton had a shot in the 38th minute but his shot was just wide of the post with Ricky Little picking up a yellow card in the 43rd minute.
Arbroath were hoping to utilise the full strength of the wind for the second half but the wind strength seemed to lift for the second half.
There was a huge appeal for a foul in the Clyde half early in the second half as Greig Spence was pulled down by the Ross Lyon who was also the last defender but the referee wasn’t interested.
Despite now dominating the possession, Arbroath just couldn’t find a way to get the ball into the box or near the Clyde goal.
In the 66th minute Luke Donnelly and Bobby Linn replaced Greig Spence and Michael McKenna with Tony Wallace coming on for Chris Johnston.
Just two minutes later and Clyde doubled their lead, a cross from Tony Wallace on a counter attack was crossed into the Arbroath 6 yard box and with Darren Smith lurking it seems the ball deflected off Ricky Little and went into his own net.
David Gold replaced James Murphy in the 71st minute, with Mark Whatley coming close in the 74th minute.
Arbroath continued to press with Steven Doris firing over after 77 minutes before Omar Kader forced a good save from David Mitchell in the 80th minute from 18 yards.
Thomas O’Brien was denied by Mitchell from 25 yards in the 87th minute before Luke Donnelly had a certain goal saved by the finger tips of Mitchell who somehow got to the ball and pushed it past his post for a corner.
The only positive for Arbroath was the news that Scott Stewart is set to return to full training on Monday evening.
We will regroup and go again.
