Arbroath 0 – 1 Dundee United – Match Report
Ladbrokes Championship – Game 17 – Season 2019 / 2020
Saturday 14th December 2019, Gayfield Park, Arbroath, 3.00pm kick off
Arbroath 0 – 1 Dundee United
The Lichties narrowly lost today at Gayfield with 4255 supporters in attendance.
Luke Donnelly came into the side with David Gold dropping to the bench and the Lichties attacking the Harbour end in a typical windy and cold Gayfield afternoon.
Although It was United who took the early lead, a Sam Stanton effort was distinctively headed by Colin Hamilton but the ball ended up beating Gaston and into the Arbroath net in the 6th minute.
We all know that this team is full of character and a Bobby Linn free kick just four minutes later was pushed over the bar by Siegrist.
The Lichties continued to attack with Linn having a shot blocked whilst Scott Stewart was unlucky as he danced past three defenders only to have his final shot blocked with a flying tackle.
A Bobby Linn free kick from 45 yards was spilled by Siegrist and Colin Hamilton really should have knocked the loose ball into the net, but there seemed to be confusion between which Arbroath player was going to strike the ball and the chance was missed.
A Ricky Little header was just over the bar as the Lichties continued to attack with United not really forcing Derek Gaston into a save.
Lawrence Shankland did have a shot the curled over the bar in the 36th minute but again Gaston was untroubled.
Just before half time and Michael McKenna had a shot blocked as the Lichties definitely had the better chances in the first half.
HT – Arbroath 0 – 1 Dundee United
Luke Donnelly had a dipping shot fly over the United bar just 2 minutes into the second half.
Dundee United looked to have the perfect opportunity to double their lead when Gaston was adjudged to have brought down Nicky Clark despite seeming to make the initial save.
A penalty kick was awarded and Gaston was booked, however Gaston made a great save to deny Nicky Clark from the spot and the score remained 0-1.
United were able to capitalise the power of the wind and a Paul Watson header over the bar was the only real chance with Gaston not really troubled for the second half.
A clearance for a corner by a Dundee United defender was probably to close to his own net for his liking but the game didn’t really cast many more chances.
A bonus for the Lichties was seeing Swankie return to the field after so long out as he entered play alongside James Murphy and Greig Spence in the 82nd minute.
FT – Arbroath 0 – 1 Dundee United
This weeks fixture would be a push for any team but for part time Lichties to play Dundee and Dundee United at home and also face an away trip to Ayr United is a tough shift for any team, but the character shown by our team deserves a lot of credit.
Thank you for your support!
C’mon the Lichties
