Annan Athletic 1 – 2 Arbroath – Match Summary

Arbroath snatched a dramatic win at Galabank on Saturday after an injury time goal by Josh Skelly claimed all 3 points.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell made 2 changes to his starting line up with Jassem Sukar and Bryan Prunty coming in for Gary Phillips and Steven Doris.

Arbroath looked fresh and hungry and seem up for the challenge from kick off as Prunty and Scott linked up well in the early exchanges of play. In fact Arbroath soon started to dominate with Annan forced to try their luck from distance as Hamilton and Little combined to keep them at bay.

Prunty almost opened the scoring but was denied after a brilliant close range save by Currie in goal for Annan, and again David Gold was was putting in another eye catching performance as both he and Sukar were providing great support going forward on both wings.

Arbroath were in complete control, but remarkably went in at half time a goal behind as defender Steven Swinglehurst rose unchallenged to knock a header in during first half injury time from Annan’s only corner of the game.

Into the second half and Liam Callaghan replaced Omar Kader who was picked up a yellow card at the end of the first half.

The Lichties didn’t take long to back onto level terms when Captain Mark Whatley smashed in a volley from a scramble in the Annan box following an Arbroath corner.

The chances kept on coming for Arbroath but the second goal just wasn’t to be found. As Arbroath pressed more and more, Annan were starting to find more space to break on the counter.

Steven Doris and Josh Skelly were introduced for Bryan Prunty and Ryan McCord as the Lichties went to all out attack for the winning goal.

As the clock ran down, it looked like both teams were going to share the points but in the second minute of injury time Josh Skelly was sent through a beautiful pass from Mark Whatley to chase. As he ran in on goal, Annan keeper Currie rushed off his line to meet Skelly but the young on-loan Dundee striker won the race to the ball and calmly rounded the keeper to fire home and seal all 3 points for Arbroath at the death.

Skelly ran towards the Arbroath fans as the players and supporters celebrated the moment together! A great reward for their support and long journey south. Skelly picked up a yellow card for his celebrations but it was a small price to pay for 3 points!spfl-league-2-game-11-annan-athletic-vs-arbroath-match-graphic
