If there’s one thing the World Cup’s good at, it’s making mugs of predictions.
Every tournament, there’s the favourites, the dark horses, and the team everyone swears will “do something this time” and every tournament, it never quite plays out the way folk expect.
That’s part of the magic, really.
Now, at Arbroath, we’re no sitting here claiming inside knowledge on who’s lifting the trophy. You’ll get ten different answers from ten different people round the club and most of them will change by next week anyway.
That’s football.
One minute a team looks unstoppable, the next they’re hanging on for dear life. A player nobody’s heard of suddenly turns into the star of the show. A big name misses a sitter and that’s them remembered for all the wrong reasons.
It’s why conversations take on a life of their own during a tournament. In the stands, in the changing room, down the pub you’ll hear everything from well thought-out takes to absolute wild shouts said with full confidence.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, folk start sizing things up in their own way. Form, injuries, a bit of gut feeling… and for those who like to get right into the numbers side of things, keeping an eye on the World Cup betting odds becomes part of the routine another way of trying to make sense of a tournament that rarely behaves itself.
Of course, even that only tells part of the story.
Because the World Cup has a habit of ignoring the script. Favourites fall, underdogs rise, and moments come out of nowhere that nobody could’ve called.
And that’s why we keep watching.
Same as always, really. Different stage, bigger spotlight but the same unpredictable game we know and love at Gayfield every week.
By the time it’s all said and done, there’ll be heroes, heartbreak, and a few folk insisting they “called it all along.”
Aye, alright then.
