Arbroath picked up their first win of the new campaign with a terrific away win against Queen’s Park at The City Stadium.
Ross Callachan and Findlay Marshall notched their maiden goals in maroon before Jack Wilkie got in on the act, with Josh Fowler’s late strike a mere consolation in a 3-1 win for the Gayfield side.
Following the opening day draw with Ayr United last weekend, it was no surprise to see the Lichties name an unchanged side for the trip to Glasgow.
It was the hosts who would force the first save of the afternoon, with Aidan Connolly seeing his shot take a deflection and loop goalwards, with Aidan McAdams alert to tip the ball over the bar.
Besides that, there was very little to write home about in the first half with neither side really creating any clear-cut chances. Queen’s had most of the ball but failed to trouble the Arbroath rearguard.
Arbroath did eventually test Calum Ferrie five minutes before half time, with Harry Cochrane taking aim from distance, but seeing his effort held by the keeper.
At the other end, McAdams was called into action to push Connolly’s shot to the side, before denying Fowler on the follow up as the sides went in deservedly level at the break.
The Lichties came out stronger in the second half though and found the net twice within just seven minutes of the restart. First half substitute Callachan would score the opener, with his free kick finding the far corner with Ferrie unsighted.
Number two followed very soon after with Marshall also scoring his first goal for the club. Ryan Dow showed great determination to get to the byline, before clipping a beautiful ball into the middle for the Aberdeen loanee to head into the back of the net.
Queen’s went in search of a way back into the game and almost had one through Fowler, who was only denied by a strong hand of the diving McAdams, but the game was put beyond any doubt soon after.
A free kick in a dangerous area out wide gave Wilkie the chance to fire the ball goalwards and despite a couple of claims of touches in the middle, it was the full back who claimed the goal as his delivery nestled in the net.
The result was beyond doubt by this point, but the home side would find the net with six minutes to play, Fowler turning well in the box before sending the ball home via the far post.
