Having defeated the Lichties 4-0 in the group stage of the Premier Sports Cup just two weeks earlier, you’d have been forgiven for expecting a similar scoreline on the opening day of the league campaign, especially after Jamie Murphy’s fifth minute goal had given Ayr the lead.
The Honest Men didn’t have things all their own way in front of the BBC cameras at Gayfield though, as a relentless Arbroath fought back and earned a more than deserved point through Nikolay Todorov’s late header.

Former Blackburn youngster Walker is both Ayr’s joint top scorer and level at the top of the assist table too, with nine goal involvements combined this season.
Two of those assists came in that win against Arbroath in July and he was on the scoresheet as recently as last weekend, opening the scoring in the 3-3 draw with Ross County
It’s been a mixed bag recently for Arbroath, who have fallen into a habit of winning handsomely at Gayfield, before slipping to narrow defeats on the road.
Last weekend’s 1-0 reverse at Cappielow was a fourth defeat from seven on the road in the Championship this season and that is a record the Lichties will be looking to rectify on Saturday, to accompany their fantastic home form
