St Johnstone 3-0 Arbroath, Saturday 23rd August 2025
The Lichties had kicked off the season with a win and a draw before making the short trip to Perth in August, but last seasons bottom side in the Premiership showed their class with a 3-0 win at McDiarmid Park.
Arbroath held strong for the first half an hour, before Jack Baird’s header broke the deadlock. An excellent Jason Holt goal and Stevie Mallan’s penalty completed the scoring in the second half to ensure the points stayed with the Saints.
Saturday will be the first league meeting of the sides at Gayfield since New Year’s Day 2003 when St Johnstone came from behind to win 3-2. Indeed, the Perth side won all four meetings in the old First Division that year.
Josh McPake
The former Rangers youngster spent most of the early years of his career out on loan in the lower tiers of both Scotland and England, but appears to have found a home at St Johnstone.
McPake’s first goal for the club came in a pre-season friendly victory at Gayfield last year and despite mainly featuring as a substitute in the Premiership, the 24-year old started the Perth side’s last five games in the top flight. He has carried that form into the Championship, sitting as the league’s top scorer with seven goals, scoring every 119 minutes, and was a constant thorn in the side of the Arbroath defence in August. He’s one to keep an eye out for on Saturday.
Last weekend saw Arbroath bring a run of four games without a win to an end in some style, as goals from Gavin Reilly, Taylor Steven, Ryan Dow and Findlay Marshall helped us to a 4-1 win over Queen’s Park.
The Lichties only lost two of those four games though, picking up draws against Morton and Partick Thistle, and will be in a confident mood when the league leaders come calling this weekend.
