The Lichties were once again beaten on penalties by their Championship opponents, as the Diamonds sent Arbroath crashing out of the KDM Evolution Trophy having done the same in the Scottish Cup less than a month previously.
Lewis McGrattan gave Airdrie the lead midway through the first half, but goals from Aaron Muirhead and Scott Robinson looked to have Arbroath heading for the semi finals.
However, Euan Henderson again proved to be a thorn in the side of the Gayfield men, levelling the match at 2-2 to send it to spot kicks where Airdrie would prevail.

What else can you say about Euan Henderson? With nine goals to his name in the league, he is not only Airdrie’s top scorer, but also topped by just four players in the whole league.
Four of his goals have come against Arbroath in the five matches between the sides this season, including on both trips to North Lanarkshire, and he is someone who simply must be stopped if the Lichties have any intention of making it third time lucky away to the Diamonds.
Three draws in a week may represent some positives, but it can’t be denied that there is a sense of disappointment at not taking all three points from more than one of those matches, particularly when leading in one and facing nine men in the other.
Indeed, last weekend’s stalemate with an ill-disciplined Ross County was the sixth draw in Arbroath’s last eight games, if you include the eventual penalty shootout defeats to this weekend’s opponents, and while the ability to remain tight at the back can only be a good thing approaching the run in, finding the net more often at the other end will surely be the aim.
